Intent

This qualification has been designed for students to develop a broad and comprehensive understanding of the hair and beauty sector, a significant core knowledge which expands the entire vocational sector and related industries. It encourages students to develop academic and study skills that will support progression within the hair and beauty sector and more broadly. Alongside the theoretical aspects of hair and beauty students will have the opportunity to complete a full practical enrichment program to include shampooing hair, hair styling, the application of make-up and facial skin care. The course benefits provide not only an education linked to fashion, science, history, business studies and computer science; it also offers students a wide opportunity of skills to transfer into employment. A career in the hair and beauty industry can be very rewarding. The industry offers a variety of roles most being both social and creative. In a society which is both demanding and fast paced, hair and beauty has an essential place; in terms of its relaxing and therapeutic qualities and its ability to enhance an individual’s sense of calm, well- being and self- confidence.

Implementation

Students are taught and assessed by specialist teaching staff who have a wealth of invaluable teaching experience in the hair and beauty sector. The Limes College offers the VTCT Level 1 and Level 2 In Hair and Beauty Certificates which are divided into units. These qualifications allow students to explore the exciting world of hair and beauty and the environment in which its industries operate; looking back in time to explore changing trends and developments within the hair and beauty sector; finding out how science is used to create products and understanding why we create images for business use. The course also ensures that students can demonstrate their skills and knowledge through both practical and theoretical settings. Learning outcomes are assessed by student portfolio and final practical assessments. Our hair and beauty room creates a positive and engaging climate for learning, setting high expectations both in terms of behaviour and academic achievement. We demonstrate outstanding knowledge of the hair and beauty curriculum through planning and delivering well-structured lessons.

Impact

Students in Hair and Beauty will develop a detailed knowledge of, and master the skills required to successfully complete the course in which students may progress on to a Hairdressing, Beauty or Media Make Up college course, seek employment as an Apprentice in a salon or may work in other related industries.

Through successful completion of course, our students will:

• Attain a variety of transferable life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking, resilience and independence,
• Develop language and communication skills needed in customer service, face to face job roles, and
• Form broader knowledge range of future higher level of further education, training, employment and career opportunities.
