Occupational Studies for the Workplace
Intent
Students can complete the NCFE Level 2 Award or Level 2 Certificate in Occupational Studies for the Workplace which is a qualification intended to be accessible to a wide range of learners of all abilities. The qualification offers a ‘hands-on’ approach to gaining practical skills, knowledge and understanding in the chosen vocational area(s). The skills, knowledge and understanding gained will help learners prepare for work through real or simulated work situations and ultimately will be invaluable in preparing students for working life beyond education. The core aim of the qualification is to provide our students with a platform upon which to further develop their skills and learning, helping to provide the building blocks towards Apprenticeships and/or further study at Key Stage 5.
Implementation
There are currently eight occupational areas to choose from ranging from Land Based Studies to Office & Business. Students will create a portfolio of evidence generated from appropriate assessment tasks which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes associated with each relevant unit. The types of evidence permitted in student portfolios, as well as the more traditional methods of written assessment, students are also able to include, for example, video, photos and other digital means of demonstrating knowledge and skills. Upon completion of their portfolios, students’ work is assessed internally prior to being externally verified.
Impact
Following the successful completion of either the Level 2 Award or the Level 2 Certificate students will be able to progress to work-based learning such as an apprenticeship and will further develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. Progression to further learning at a 6th Form College is also possible and there are many qualifications available to students that offer them a broad choice of options.
